PC/OS Open64 Workstation released

Today we are pleased to announce the availability of PC/OS Open64 Workstation 10. This release targets specifically 64 bit hardware systems. This release is based on the Ubuntu 9.04 base system and has been updated with all the security and bug patches as of May 25, 2009.

Some of the new features include:

XFCE 4.6

Openoffice.org 3.1

QT 4

Monodevelop

VLC

Exaile

Sun Java

Flash 64 bit plugin

Multimedia and development tools and libraries

All multimedia codecs

of course there are some issues and here are the known ones:

When you boot to the liveCD it comes up to the GDM you have to wait 10 seconds for it to login. Canonical introduced this in Ubuntu 9.04.

No usplash. Yes I know some people want the elegance but many of the custom Usplash files failed to load up. We are working on this and hope to have Usplash back in PC/OS Open64 Workstation 10.1.

On the LiveCD the panel launchers do not work. This is due to XFCE including a working directory structure to panel launchers. You can right click hit properties and set it and they will work fine.

There will only be 3 releases of Open64. Workstation, Server and core coming out later this month we are currently testing these other two releases.

We will not be releasing an Open64 desktop CD image unless there is significant demand for it.

To download the release you can get it here

You can get the md5 file from here

To support the project do consider buying the release from on-disk.com for $49.99 or make a donation.

Great news.
It may be a vocabulary question ( I'm french speaking) but :
What difference are you making between the not foreseen desktop edition and the now existing workstation edition ?
Cannot "workstation" be "desktop" too ?

Open64 Workstation is a DVD ISO that contains everything from development environments to the full OpenOffice.org suite.

If you are familiar with PC/OS we also have a product called OpenDesktop which is a CD ISO which cuts down size dramatically. It has no development tools, it has AbiWord and Gnumeric rather than OpenOffice.org and xfburn rather than Brasero. With OpenDesktop size and features are major differentiators.

We will not be producing this ISO for two reasons, most 64 bit PCs come with DVD drives and for right now the major adoptors of 64 bit PC's are more technical and want the development environments and the extra features.

PC/OS Roots

PC/OS roots are derived from the Ubuntu distribution. Ubuntu is created and maintained by Canonical Inc. and has a vast community support system. By basing PC/OS on this outstanding base we cover two grounds, a lot of the problems and fixes are in line with Ubuntu. Many fixes for Ubuntu and Xubuntu work on PC/OS. All software compiled for Ubuntu runs on PC/OS and should anything happen to PC/OS users can still get their fixes from Canonical and maintain their distribution and makes the migration smoother. The desktop is based off of XFCE and is laid out similar to the BeOS. PC/OS does not aim to be a ground up reimplementation of the BeOS but to be as simple to use as the BeOS was. The XFCE desktop is light, modern and powerful. It can be used to power the newest workstations as well as older hardware allowing you to get the maximum potential out of your investment.

What can I do with PC/OS

It is your computer, do with it what you want. if you want to watch that Windows Media file, go right ahead. Your music files not in .ogg, thats fine by us. Do you want to watch that flash video on YouTube? go ahead.

Of course, we do encourage the open route. Open Source doesn't survive without contribution but you as users should have the freedom to do whatever it is you want to do.

We also encourage consistency. XFCE is our desktop, not GNOME, not KDE, not TWM, not PWM. of course in accordance with our first part of the mission statement the others are available for download and installation.
